The best cleaning schedule for working moms

One of those adulting and parenting tasks that you cannot escape is cleaning your home.
Especially when you have kids who make a mess on a constant basis, it seems like cleaning is all you do when you are not working. There is not a right answer for how to clean instead there are different ways to set up your schedule so that it works for your family. Let’s talk about the cleaning schedule for working moms.
You will need to consider a few factors such as when are you available, who all can help you clean and when are you most efficient with your time (morning or evening?). Below I share a few tips and tricks that have been super helpful for me in maintaining the house during the week so that the weekend cleaning is much more manageable.Â

What you need before your start your cleaning schedule
Before you can start cleaning the house, you must have some essential items that will clean up all the spaces in the home. I have two kids under two, which means my house looks pretty messy…like all the time.
However, I love a nice-looking kitchen and living room because it is the first thing you see when you walk into the home, so I do my best to maintain those main areas cleaned up and spread out my other chores throughout the week.
Here are my favorite cleaning items that make everything that much easier (I’ve attached some links).Â
- Cleaning bin with lysol wipes, Mrs. Meyers surface cleaner, windex & cloth. There are other items I use during the deep cleaning days, but these are my top items when just cleaning up for the day (quick since I do go to work).
2. Broom. I love this one in particular, but anyone could work. Here is another option.
3. Vacuum. With a toddler who makes a mess on a constant basis, a vacuum is my best friend. Here are two options that both are good and get the work done.
4. Swiffer WetJet. This is what I use to mop the dirty areas with spills my son likes to make on a daily basis.
5. Bins all over the home! This is also one of my favorite mom hacks. You may notice a bunch of stuff constantly piled up or placed in the wrong area. OR, your kids are moving things around on a daily basis. So, make your life easier and have bins everywhere for when you find something in the wrong place.
I even add one by the stairs for anything that is downstairs but needs to go upstairs. This also includes adding laundry bins in areas where clothes are often thrown or taken off.
Example cleaning schedule for working moms
Depending on the amount of cleaning that you have, you can get this done within 30 minutes to 1 hour.
Here is an example of a daily consistent schedule. A daily schedule is something that you do every single day. I will then share an example schedule for the other rooms in the house that you can spread throughout the week.
Morning schedule/ checklist –
- Put a load of clothes to wash.
- Wash the dishes or load/unload the dishwasher.
- Pick up living room & kitchen.
- Vacuum the necessary spaces.
- Wipe the countertops.
Evening schedule/ checklist –
- Put in another load of clothes.
- Sweep downstairs and mop any particular areas that need it.
- Wipe down countertop areas.
Now, let me share how a weekly cleaning schedule would look for the rooms in the house.
You will break down the different rooms per day. That is the best way to not neglect a room and also not overwhelm yourself with having to deep clean a bunch of rooms over the weekend. This is especially helpful when you are limited with time but have a bigger space to clean up. Check out the example schedule below.
You can download a FREE cleaning schedule & checklist with blank templates here.
Monday: Master Bedroom
Tuesday: Bathroom(s)
Wednesday: Dining Room + Playroom
Thursday: The kid’s room
Friday: Outdoors & hallways
Saturday: OFF
Sunday: Deep Clean major rooms + other smaller rooms you did not get to.
Here is another example, click to download (comes with blank customizable template):

If you don’t have too much time, spread this into 2 weeks taking every other day off.

You simply need to find a balance between the spaces that need to be cleaned and how much time you have on which day(s).
Thinking about your cleaning routine can be super overwhelming. Remember to delegate items with your partner/ spouse too (or any other adults living with you). This will help you feel more at ease and less chaotic and stressed. Your kids can also help you with the cleaning or organizing of toys and other lighter objects.
How are you feeling about cleaning? Any schedule/ checklist that you would like to add?
Share it below in the comments, I would love to hear your thoughts.
